You just lost your job and have no clue what to do now. How do I make the most of my time? How do I get over the pain, anger, and frustration I’m feeling right now? How can I avoid spiraling out of control? Being unemployed can lead to depression, but you don’t have to feel that way for long. We have seen these issues time and time again in our depression treatment programs, and we can help you recover after a job loss. Here are some tips to start this next chapter in your life.
File Unemployment Right Away (If Applicable)
If you qualify for unemployment, file as soon as possible. It may take a few weeks for your unemployment benefits to kick in, so you need to prepare right away. Simply knowing you have an income will provide enough relief to ease depression after a job loss, and it will help you focus more on your job search. The unemployment office can also give you job suggestions, increasing your chances of finding work soon.

Take Time to Process Your Emotions
Losing a job is much like losing a loved one. You may feel angry, sad, guilty, and regretful as part of the grieving process. Give yourself time to go through that. Don’t jump into a job the next day. Wait at least a week before you get back out there. You need time to heal and recover so you can enter a new job with a clear head.
Ask about Forgiveness or Extension Programs for Your Bills
If you are worried about your bills, contact each company to ask about payment extensions or forgiveness programs. For instance, many auto lenders allow borrowers to skip one payment per year. You will still have to pay the interest that month, but you will not have to make the full car payment. One extra payment will be added to the end of your loan. This will clear more funds to help you get by for now.
Revamp Your Resume
Don’t just update your resume – completely revamp it. Use this as an opportunity to create a new persona for yourself. Having a fresh, modern resume will make you look more appealing to potential employers, and it will make you feel confident with each application. There are plenty of free resume templates you can download online, and all you have to do is fill out the information.
Apply for Jobs in Person and Online
Many employers now require online applications because they are easy to sort through. That doesn’t give you a chance to make a personal impression. If you have the opportunity to speak with someone directly, you’ll make a greater impact. Hand the manager your resume in person, and firmly shake his or her hand. Present yourself as a confident, capable person actively looking for work. This will give you the best chance of landing a job quickly.
Don’t Get Discouraged in Your Job Hunt
Finding a job takes time. Finding a job you love takes even longer. Try not to get too discouraged during the search. Life has a way of working itself out, and stress doesn’t yield good results. Maintain a positive outlook, and you will be back to work in no time.
